Nine common misunderstandings in the choice of home theater speakers

What kind of speakers are good speakers? This is really an overly broad question. Different angles and different listeners have different standards, but for certain attitudes to choosing speakers, we must first know that it is not acceptable. The editor saw an article about the misunderstanding of speaker selection on the Internet today and posted it to share with everyone. 1. Use brand-name speakers u003d good sound quality. This equation is valid under certain circumstances: the manufacturer’s package is used (must include high and low speakers, crossover) and the cabinet volume and structure are selected according to the official. This situation is equivalent to the technical support provided by the manufacturer. If done carefully, generally good results can be achieved. If you don't use the crossover that the speaker is officially equipped with, the sound quality and the effect will depend on the level of the speaker designer and manufacturer, and it has nothing to do with the brand-name speaker itself. 2. Sufficient materials u003d good sound quality. Which is more advantageous, a golden knife or a steel knife? There is a story that can explain the problem: Guangzhou Haiyin Electric Factory in the 1990s sold both domestic and imported power amplifiers. In order to attract customers, the domestic power amplifiers at that time opened the lid and sold them-you see, I used eight. Sanken tube, 500W big ring cow, 20000uF filter capacitor, one power amplifier is enough for 60 kilograms; and a second-hand Cambridge power amplifier next to it: 4 power tubes, 100W cow, 8200uF filter capacitor, 20 kilograms weight; but a domestic power amplifier After the failure, even the boss who sold the domestic machine had nothing to say. Therefore, the premise of this equation is that the company's technology has reached a high level. Otherwise, the products of many companies with good technology do not look very good but the effect is shocking, because people use good steel on the blade. 3. The sound quality is only related to the speakers used. This is absolutely wrong. Every speaker has potential, and a high-level designer can often give full play to its potential. For example, there are hundreds of thousands of boxes from many famous factories that use Hivi, which is significantly higher than the boxes made by Hivi with the same speakers. This is the power of the speaker design and frequency divider. 4. Many people say that good u003d good. It is possible, but not necessarily. In many cases, everyone’s sense of hearing is different and what they pursue is different. Speakers are very personal. If you like them, you may not like them. There is a famous saying in this industry: Ears receive goods. Just find what you like, if you can’t hear it, see if its product features and your appetite, and whether its philosophy is what you want. In general, take a look at why others like this product, and whether you are also a hobby, and then decide. 5. Use a good speaker, but the crossover is okay. This is absolutely wrong. You can check the frequency divider of the famous brand box. There is no simple one. The frequency divider is not less important than the speaker for the speaker. The reason is simple: the output of the power amplifier goes to the crossover first and then to the speaker. The frequency divider determines the energy and frequency distribution between the speakers of the speaker, and the impact on the sound quality can be imagined. To give a more direct example, a medium-sized speaker, an ordinary designer can play 50% of its skill, but a good designer can play 8-9% of its skill, then it is likely to use a higher-level speaker than the average designer. A speaker that only exerts the five powers of success is better. 6. Electronic frequency division is better than power frequency division. These are two different frequency division methods, each with its own advantages and disadvantages, depending on the orientation of the speaker designer. Electronic crossover: advantages: less high and low crosstalk, and a well-designed electronic crossover sounds cleaner. Disadvantages: The design is complicated, two more power amplifiers and audio cables are added, and the cost is increased. Power divider: advantages: simple, high reliability, adjustable tone, universal. Disadvantages: The internal resistance of the inductance and capacitance of the frequency divider will affect the damping coefficient of the speaker, thereby affecting the effect. 7. Heavy speakers are good. A heavy speaker has at least one advantage: it is not easy to produce vibration, and the materials may be sufficient, but this is only the advantage. The weight of the speaker is determined by the thickness of the panel and the weight of the speaker. The thickness of the panel is beneficial to the low frequency of the speaker, but also pay attention to the tightness of the speaker shell. None of it has much to do with the sound quality. It is still necessary to comprehensively look at all aspects of the box. 8. Large-caliber speakers have good sound quality. If the bass is better if you change to a large-caliber speaker, it may be appropriate, of course, it refers to the case of proper design. Speakers made of 3, 4-inch speakers often sound thinner than 5, 6-inch speakers because of the lack of low-frequency parts, so when you want to make a small box design, you often pay special attention to the low-end balance of the human voice. It is hard to say whether the large-diameter speaker box is good for the mid-to-treble part. Generally, the larger the caliber, the lower the high-frequency cut-off frequency of the woofer. The mid- and high-frequency part of the speaker depends on the tweeter. Many large-diameter boxes have midrange speakers for this reason. 9. The full-range speaker sounds nice. Many people feel this way. There are reasons for this. First, compared to the two-unit box, the full-range speaker has only one sound point, the phase is accurate, and many full-range speaker manufacturers have already tuned the sound. You can install the speaker directly without a crossover, which reduces a lot of trouble. Compared with poorly designed two-way speakers, full-range speakers can at least maintain a certain quality. But often the frequency band of the full-range speaker is not wide enough, and the high and low sounds will feel insufficient, so from the perspective of HiFi, there is still dissatisfaction.
