projection mapping

Welcome to my tutorial on projection mapping!
There is a lot of material on the Internet to show this technology, but how people create this effect is still elusive.
A lot of people have done detailed tutorials, but I feel like they haven\'t applied it at work, which is why the way I explain this technique is to take you through the installation.
I think it\'s more specific.
Also, regarding the question of time, there is a good project of projection mapping on its website!
I \'ve been wondering how projectors can be used to create such a magical and immersive experience, and after years of brewing in my mind, I finally have the opportunity to create a device using this technology.
This is my first attempt to enter the field of projection mapping.
If you think my work and guidance is worth your vote, please vote for me!
Here, the video of my work, which also shows the construction process: the most enjoyable music of this paragraph is called life by Ludovico Einaudi.
In order to create this, I need the medium level skills of 3d modeling software, and of course the projector!
What is the projection mapping?
Projection mapping describes the technique of using a projector on any surface and can turn it into a dynamic visual display.
It can be used to bring buildings and objects into life, create an immersive environment and provide an exciting interactive experience instead of using boring flat white screens.
Different approaches can be adopted to achieve the desired results, but it always includes the combination of creative thinking and complex technical planning.
Typically, the content includes computer animation, 2D, and 3D effects.
The projection mapping uses a daily video projector and the light is mapped to any surface, turning any ordinary object of 3D shape into an interactive display.
Projection mapping can be used for advertising, live concerts, theaters, games, calculations, decorations, and anything else you can think.
I have decided to use this technique to create a device that revolves around you in an environment that can comfortably wash colors and textures.
As my canvas, I decided to use a translucent plastic sheet.
They allow the light emitted by the projector to shine through them, creating an ethereal feeling.
Choose your canvas wisely!
You don\'t want to create some projects based on not being able to express what you want.
Here are some inspiring examples of what others use as their canvas.
This is a video of the AntiVJ installation, which is my inspiration for this project.
Projection mapping can create an immersive experience for theater, TV or home.
Projection mapping can bring everyday objects into life (like shoes).
You can even project on the car!
These are just a few random examples of fast-growing new media forms.
See many blogs for more examples.
I first brainstorm about what I want to express.
Then I made a sketch (I have lost)
Finally go to the computer.
There is a concrete concept in my mind that I modeled to scale along with where I\'m going to install it.
It is very important to think of the scale, too big, you lose it, the effect is diluted.
Too small to work at all!
An easy way to understand scale is to put a person into the scene.
Here are some iterations I have experienced.
At some point we all use spreadsheets to solve specific math problems.
Starting from the intentionally selected value, under certain rules that we are strongly adding to the system when we set up the system, we are able to get very complicated results immediately, which is also, just adjust the original parameters, it can be recalculated immediately.
But what if we can simulate the process with geometry?
The benefits of this process are direct.
This is a huge leap in the quality of our processes, because we are no longer bound by tools;
We will now design our own tools.
On the other hand, when minimizing the amount of work required to create and test design variants, the parameter design is basic.
Although my concept is clear, I would like to be able to change my model quickly and easily and try other changes, which is why I chose to build a parametric model for rhinos using grasshoppper.
I suggest you learn parameter modeling if you encounter this situation.
It will prove invaluable.
Once I\'m completely satisfied with the model and its appearance, it\'s time to build it!
The picture I attached describes this plan from the top view along the panel length.
The plastic I bought was a big roll and I bought mine according to the width I needed.
The sheets were first cut and numbered in an organized way.
Next, two pieces of wood were prepared for each piece of paper.
I decided to lift the fish board with a fine line.
Attach to the ceiling frame first and then anchor to the ground so they don\'t fly around.
Please remember that it is very troublesome to tie with nylon fishing line!
I often use my digital model as a reference and I basically use digital manufacturing, but this is more of a manual manufacturing.
Tedious work!
Now that our canvas is fully ready, it\'s time to start mapping!
We first purchased two projectors and two laptops.
Then we decided on the best location for the projector.
This is important because the resolution of your final work will be affected.
Place the projector in one position and its throw completely covers everything you want it to project.
The closer the better!
For our structure, because we want all the front panels to be able to present their own color, we decided to use two projectors, and from the projector\'s point of view, none of them intersect.
After being sure that the projectors are in the right position, we marked their position with tape so that we can recreate the same settings multiple times.
After that, we started the Resolume Arena with which we created masks for each panel.
Then we have two masks, one for the left projector and one for the right projector.
Now that we have these masks, we can know exactly what the projector sees.
We now need to align the camera in 3d software to see the same thing as the projector.
In Cinema4d, we set the mask to the background image and place the cinema4d camera in the approximate position to match the projector position.
Then by guessing and luck, we moved and rotated the cinema4d camera until our 3d scene matched exactly with the digital scene.
We have to do this for the Cinema 4D camera.
It\'s a tricky step to take a moment and everything depends on how much you align the digital model with the mask. Ok!
If you go so far, you can finally have a rest.
This is now an interesting creative part, watching a lot of videos for inspiration, learning using tutorials, or simply downloading content from other generous artists.
I created most of my content using Adobe After Effects.
I found the tutorial on this site very useful: I chose a lot of color gradients because I wanted to shine.
This is where the real mapping happens.
So far, we have prepared a magnificent canvas to place the projector in the best position and align the digital camera with the projector.
Now, in this step, as an artist, you have to decide from which perspective to look at your work.
Keep in mind that projection mapping usually works only from one angle.
After deciding this, you now need to place a third camera in Cinema 4D, which represents the views of the audience.
You want the audience standing at this point to see a completely distorted image.
That\'s why we converted this camera into a projector in Cinema 4D.
To convert a camera to a projector in Cinema 4D, select the material label of the object you want to project, where you need to change the mapping to a camera mapping, and then select the camera you want to convert.
See the last picture.
In the software, we use it to project our content on the panel.
To do this, you need to use the jpeg sequence of the content.
I did this with Adobe premiere\'s export settings.
We then recorded this through a virtual camera in Cinema 4D.
Now that almost everything is set, it\'s time to render what the virtual camera sees so it can be used to project on the canvas of your choice.
Make sure the resolution is rendered to the projector.
You are basically done at this point!
Through my guidance, you have reached the end of the journey.
I hope that using the projection mapping in the project will inspire you and open a new medium of expression in your repertoire.
